Newport Royale

2019 sees the re-launch of the Michel Herbelin classic – Newport Royale.  Around 10 years in the making, this new model continues to showcase the very best of Michel Herbelin watchmaking.  The evolution of the line has produced a superbly tactile and fluid bracelet to case connection, that  is so beautifully engineered that it is hard to see where one ends and the other begins.

The graphic linearity of the links in its high grade stainless steel bracelet are softened by a rounded case bearing a dial of sapphire blue or real mother-of-pearl – either with simple batons or studded with diamonds.

Casual when it wants to be, yet always elegant, this timepiece with its uninterrupted silver look and urban edge exudes a timeless allure.

Just the thing to accessorise your wrist!

The Inspiration Day/Date Watch – A Legacy of Style

Inspiration Day/Date

The Inspiration collection is inspired by vintage watch designs from 1947-1950. The rounded contours of the 38 mm polished steel case are accented with a ribbed, ball-shaped crown set with a blue cabochon. The curved dial sits neatly under domed sapphire glass. This vintage styled case highlights the sleek, contemporary aesthetic of the dial, whose sparse architecture ensures perfect readability.

Baton hour markers alternate with Arabic numerals in a balanced arrangement on the simply laid out minute track, set off by the soberness of the hour and minute hands with their luminescent coating. At 3 and 9 o’clock, date and day counters with needle displays add further elements to the orchestration. But that’s not all. . . An aperture at 6 o’clock draws the gaze to a Moon Phase indicator. Artfully decorated with stars on a midnight blue background, it shows the precise positioning of the moon in real time.

Flawless precision

Driven by a Swiss-made quartz movement (Ronda), the Inspiration Day/Date combines this mark of quality and reliability with the legacy of French watchmaking know-how. Like all the brand’s timepieces, this watch was conceived, designed, assembled, regulated and quality checked at the Michel Herbelin studios that have stood in the Jura mountains of the Franche-Comté region since 1947.

Available with a choice of a leather strap or a steel Milanese chain link bracelet, this new timepiece by Michel Herbelin flits between tradition and a sleek contemporary aesthetic. On sale at a very affordable price considering the care taken over its detailing, it will tastefully complement the chic style of its owner.

The Greek Classic Architectural Inspired Antares

Michel Herbelin_Antares_cadran argenté - nature morte COF. 17447crop

Since its launch in 2007, the Antarès with interchangeable strap has become one of Michel Herbelins fastest selling designs. This season sees a new version with a new lyre-shaped case. Featuring the same ingenious system as its forerunners, this watch lets the wearer change the strap for themselves.

A jewel of a watch

A departure from the existing round and rectangular shaped watches, this new design is inspired by classical Greek architecture. Its curved case in stainless steel is delicately fluted like the columns of Antiquity, extending into chiseled lugs that unify the whole in a pleasingly flowing aesthetic. The case – finished with a crown topped with a black onyx – showcases the dial and its distinctively generous dimensions. There are three lovely dial designs to choose from: pure and simple real white mother-of-pearl, sophisticated matte black “velvet” studded with diamonds, or timeless Roman numerals against a silvered background with a sun ray centre.

Freedom of style

A timepiece of everlasting style, it keeps up with changing trends thanks to its easy and practical system of interchangeable straps. Since “it’s a lady’s prerogative to change her mind”, Michel Herbelin offers a broad palette of colourways (no less than 30) and materials, in a single or double wrap style, to swap in seconds according to your mood. Just slide the strap between the lugs of the case, clip it, and you’re good to go!

Cap Camarat

Sporty Elegance with Neo-vintage Charm

Michel Herbelin - Cap Camarat - nature morte crop

Michel Herbelin French Watchmaking Studio has named its new collection of timepieces after an idyllic French Riviera destination: Cap Camarat. The first model in the collection, powered by a self-winding movement, exudes sporty elegance and a seventies-style neo-vintage vibe.

Seventies-inspired design

A modern interpretation of a vintage 1970s timepiece from the watchmaking heritage of Michel Herbelin, the Cap Camarat is housed in a stainless steel case measuring 40.5 mm in diameter. The polished facets of the case are skillfully complemented by a vertical brushed finish. The hexagonal shape makes for a sturdy geometric look accentuated by the crown protection stamped with the Michel Herbelin logo, and a vertical brushed steel bezel decorated with six screws.

Beneath a sapphire crystal, the graduated blue circular dial is a subtle nod to the brand’s signature nautical theme, with a horizontal stamped pattern reminiscent of sailor stripes. Vintage-inspired beveled hour markers and rectangular faceted hour and minute hands lend character to the piece. The minute track on the encircling flange and discreet date aperture at 6 o’clock ensure that readings are accurate and accessible.

Rounding out the aesthetic scorecard of this timepiece, the brand’s signature four-link steel bracelet is finished to match the case. The watch is water-resistant to 100 metres.

An ode to French craftsmanship

The Cap Camarat is heir to a skilled French watchmaking tradition rooted in the country’s Jura mountains since 1947. It was designed, assembled, adjusted and inspected in the Michel Herbelin workshops. It offers the precision of a fine quality Swiss movement: the Sellita is a robust and reliable self-winding movement that clocks 28,800 vibrations per hour and incorporates 26 jewels and a 38-hour power reserve. The movement is finished to an exacting level of detail, and the Côtes de Genève pattern of the oscillating mass engraved “Michel Herbelin” can be admired through the transparent caseback.

The Cap Camarat oscillates between the contemporary and the timeless, capturing the spirit of the Michel Herbelin French Watchmaking Studio: to bring the pleasure of a beautifully made timepiece to as many watch lovers as possible, at the right price.

Essential Colours for Autumn/Winter 2018

AW18 colour palette Forest Green / Burgundy / Stone / Camel / Navy Blue

As the hottest summer in 42 years nears an end, our focus turns to Autumn and the inevitable shift in our choice of attire.  Accessories can play an important role in what we wear, often allowing a splash of colour in a way that would not be acceptable in larger item of clothes.  Fashion gurus from the catwalks of London, Paris and Milan predict that this season, we will see a selection of Greens, Burgundy, Navy Blue and darker neutrals like Camel.  The absence of black and brown on the list is quite conspicuous.  Perhaps this is because staple black and dark brown will always be a favourite, but perhaps are not the most adventurous.  Combining these colours creates a cash efficient capsule wardrobe that can be mixed and matched – a trick used by many a fashionista wanting to make the most out the current must-haves.

These are our selection of Autumnal colour watches to keep you looking ultra chic as the leaves start to fall.

And for the ladies:

Newport Classic – The history of the cushion shape and cut

30 years after the first Michel Herbelin Newport model was produced, 2018 sees the introduction of the Newport Classic watch. Already admired for its stylish dial with drop second feature, high spec sapphire crystal and perhaps most notably, for its distinctive cushion shaped case.

Michel Herbelin - Newport Classique - nature morte - 18264_AP05GO.

The cushion is a shape not commonly seen in the Herbelin collections, so this anniversary seems entirely the right time to reflect on the style. The cushion shape is popular as a style bridge between the harsh corners of the square and the occasionally severe geometry of the perfect round watch case.

In jewellery, the cushion cut diamond has been made popular by many high profile celebrity engagements, leading to a resurgence in recent years. Ivanka Trump sports a 6 carat cushion cut diamond in her engagement ring, while Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Garner with a stunning 4.5 carat cushion cut diamond in 2005.

One of the most famous (and largest) known of these most prized shaped rocks is the Hope Diamond, gifted to the Smithsonian Institution in 1958. Weighing in at over 45.52 carats, its antique cushion cut accentuates is size and vintage glamour. Coincidentally, both Garners engagement ring and the Hope diamond were cut by master jeweller, Harry Winston.

In 1962, the Hope Diamond was exhibited at The Louvre in Paris for one month and the city of and passion connected with this most romantic of shapes.

The Newport classic has a vintage 1970s vibe, giving it a welcome touch of heritage chic, but with a modern 50 metre water resistant, Swiss quartz movement. Whether the blue and tan, white and tan or all black version is more your bag, they are all worth serious consideration as a modern take on an old favourite.

Trophy Automatic Divers Watches from Michel Herbelin

MH_Trophy_Photo artistique_Juin2018

Going back to their roots of quality horology and with a love of the sea, this year Michel Herbelin introduces the Trophy collection.  These are automatic divers watches launched to mark the 16th edition of the Porquerolles Classic, which the brand has sponsored for the past four years.  This high-profile regatta held from 7 to 10 June brings together superb classic yachts with a glorious history.  Battling it out on the open sea, they echo the spirit of this diver’s watch with a 300-metre water resistance.

Carefully designed to meet the exacting requirements of experienced divers, the Trophy boasts a 42-mm case carved from a solid 316L stainless steel block, with vertical brushing on the top and polished edges. Its rotating stainless steel bezel is held within softened lugs that extend to integrate seamlessly into the strap. With a 60-minute graduated scale and an indicator triangle picked out in luminescent coating, the bezel ensures safe and accurate reading of dive and decompression times. It only rotates in one direction – anticlockwise – guaranteeing that the number of minutes spent underwater cannot be increased accidentally, only reduced.

The dial, protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, is meteorite grey or grained blue depending on the version, offering optimum visibility thanks to its oversized hands and easy-to-see hour markers with blue-emitting luminescent coating. At 3 o’clock the date aperture features a magnifying glass meaning you never lose track of time, even while diving in the deepest waters…

Under automatic control

With a screw-down crown and a screw-in caseback, this Michel Herbelin timepiece fulfils all the criteria of a professional diving watch and is water-resistant to 300 metres. Not many people would want to venture so far down. . . but just in case, the Trophy makes it possible!

This instrument comes on a leather strap – bringing your passion for diving into everyday life – or mounted on a stainless steel strap that adjusts over a wetsuit, and it’s equipped with an automatic mechanical movement of Swiss manufacture (Sellita). A guarantee of reliability and accuracy, this oscillates at 28,000 vibrations per hour, with 26 jewels and a 38-hour power reserve.

Drawn, designed, assembled, adjusted and inspected at the Michel Herbelin workshop that has been based in France’s Franche-Comté region since 1947, this new model is heir to over 70 years of French watchmaking know-how.

The Right Watch for the Job

Whatever your lifestyle, trade or vocation, it can be hard to find the perfect watch.  The choice of wrist wear can often be extensive.  There are of course practical reasons why some styles will work better than others.  For example, if you have to wear a shirt sleeve, the watch you choose may well need to have a slim case depth so that it can be hidden under the cuff.  The more chunky, sporty models may be desired if more functions are needed like a stop watch or extra time sub-dials.  Obviously the higher the water resistance, the less the wearer needs to worry about an accidental immersion in water, so it would suit the more active person.

Here are our suggestions for the perfect watch for your job:

Charlotte and Bruno: the story behind the image

When you see an advert for a product you love, as a consumer, you really want to believe that the characters in it are real. As an advertiser, it is your job to pick convincing people to help convey your message.  Wouldn’t it be easier if the people chosen for the advert were actually just doing their job? That’s what we thought!

Meet Charlotte and Bruno. They are real watchmakers in the Michel Herbelin studio in Charquemont, France. They have worked together for years and share the same love and passion for the watches they create.

Charlotte and Bruno
Watchmakers from the Michel Herbelin studio

Charlotte is 23 years old and already has 5 years experience as a watchmaker. After studying commerce, Charlotte chose to move into watchmaking, attending the renowned school in the area in Morteau (Doubs). At the age of 18, she joined Michel HERBELIN as part of her watchmaking CAP, thanks to her aunt and grandfather who both worked at Maison HERBELIN. Following her apprenticeship, she was hired to work in after-sales service and at the Atelier as a watchmaker.Assembling, hands setting, control, precision and mastery of watch parts have been a part of everyday life for over 5 years.

Bruno is 45 years old with 25 years experience working as a watchmaker with Michel Herbelin. Bruno joined the workshop at Michel HERBELIN through a family connection (his brother), in 1989.He briefly left the House for new adventures at a watch manufacturer located in the region, then returned in 1995. He joined the after-sales service at Michel HERBELIN as part of a qualification contract with one year of continued education.During this time, Bruno’s workshop manager passed on to him his watchmaking craftsmanship and expertise. Bruno succeeded him to become Head of After Sales Service in 2005.

Michel Herbelin AdvertBruno now uses his 25 years of unrivaled technical and watchmaking knowledge to teach a new generation of in-house watchmakers. One of whom is his son who is, in turn, serving an apprenticeship with Michel HERBELIN.

As you can imagine, Bruno is a lover of watches, he particularly likes the J Class collection, he says it is a ”very beautiful mechanical watch that marked his time ”. The family spirit, the rigour of the job and the new challenges, such as the arrival of the Newport Connect, enliven his daily life as an expert watchmaker and Director of the After Sales Service. Charlotte particularly likes working on the Newport, especially the chronograph models for their sporty design and the new ladies skeleton created for the 30 year anniversary of the range.

Charlotte and Bruno’s own family connections to the brand, echo the ethos of the Michel Herbelin work force, keeping family values at its core. The founder Michel Herbelin handed down his knowledge to his two sons Pierre-Michel and Jean-Claude and in turn, their sons, Maxime and Mathieu have taken up the challenge, in an increasingly competitive climate, to continue to fly the flag for family values in the world of watchmaking.

Happy 30th Anniversary Newport

The iconic Newport watch, created in 1988 is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.  To mark the occasion, Michel Herbelin are issuing a Newport automatic watch with three hands and date, in a numbered limited series of 500 pieces worldwide.  This exclusive special edition timepiece is a modern reinterpretation of the Newport.

30th Anniversary Newport watch model 1668/G14CB. Limited edition 500 pieces. Recommended Retail Price: £1,120.

New design

The new-generation Newport harbours elements of both the original Newport watch, released in 1988, and the Newport Connect – the first French-made smart watch launched in 2017.

Faithful to the Newport code, it is instantly recognisable thanks to central horns, the wide-berth bezel, the ship’s wheel on the crown and tapered hour markers in the form of stylised hulls.

The 41mm polished steel case is faceted and a fraction larger than the previous version which was 40.3mm in diameter. Coated in anthracite grey PVD, the case has a distinguished air suggestive of the watch’s high tech influences. The bezel, also in anthracite grey PVD-coated steel, is discreetly engraved “Newport”. Five bezel screws (inspired by yacht winches) punctuate a functional, no-nonsense dial. Framed by the minute track on a circular brushed blue flange, the black carbon backdrop showcases black nickel hands specially designed for Michel Herbelin. Adding a dynamic dimension to the ensemble, the hands and imposing hour markers are partially finished with a luminescent coating for optimal readability. A date aperture is discreetly positioned at 3 o’clock. The notched crown, taking a conical form, adds the finishing touch to this timepiece.

The watch is built to last with a sturdy FKM rubber strap and meticulously finished to ensure comfortable wear. The smooth, shiny finish sets off the modern-day elegance of this limited edition.

Collectors take note: only 500 pieces will be issued worldwide.  Not to leave any client disappointed, Michel Herbelin has lined up a new-generation steel Newport with three hands and date for general release. Distinct from the anniversary edition, the watch has a blue sunburst dial and leather strap.

Automatic pilot

Fitted with a Swiss-made ETA automatic mechanical movement that clocks 28,800 vibrations per hour, this watch is water-resistant to 100 metres and offers a 42-hour power reserve. Showcasing impeccable attention to detail, the transparent caseback reveals an oscillating rotor engraved “Michel Herbelin” and decorated with a Côtes de Genève pattern, proffering a glimpse of the circular-grained bridges and frame.

As with all the brand’s timepieces, this Newport was drawn, designed, assembled, adjusted and inspected at the Michel Herbelin studio in the Jura mountains of the Franche-Comté region. Heir to a French watchmaking tradition stretching back over 70 years, it offers the assurance of stringent technical standards.

Three decades of history

In the early 1980s, when Jean-Claude Herbelin took over the reins of the company his father founded, he set his sights on launching a new collection that would encapsulate the core values and French watchmaking heritage of the Michel Herbelin brand. The Newport collection honours the family’s passion for sailing and the sea. Inspired by the yachts competing in the America’s Cup Race in Newport, Rhode Island, these timepieces take their shape from the portholes of transatlantic yachts. Capturing a spirit of adventure, the Newport charts a course for freedom and far-flung destinations.

Three decades since it was created in 1988, the Newport watch continues to be the brand’s number one best-seller and the success story shows no signs of stopping!
